This impressive limestone fortress is one of Britain's most complete medieval castles. The castle has its origin in the Norse period and the last Viking King, Magnus, died here in 1265. The settlement grew up to serve the castle and became the main governmental centre and island capital, until the major port of Douglas took over in 1869.
