The great square keep, built around 1450 by the MacNamaras then fell into the hands of the O’Briens, Princes of Thomond. It was later the home of Admiral Penn, father of William Penn the founder of Pennsylvania.

The castle has been carefully restored and is a wonderful example of the life-style of the 15th and 16th centuries. The great hall where the Earls of Thomond held court, private chambers and offices are furnished with Lord Gort’s magnificent medieval collection.

The Folk Park shows the crafts and skills of the Shannon farming region.
