A quiet market town around a castle built by the Normans which Lady Anne Clifford rebuilt in the 17th century, but retained the Norman keep.
The church of St Lawrence in the town centre contains an organ from Carlisle Cathedral.
The town lies in a loop of the River Eden at the foot of the Pennine range and is good walking country along the Eden Valley.
