This old town stretches along the A413 in the valley of the River Misbourne. At the foot of the steep Gore\'s Hill is Bury Farm, once the home of Guilielma Springett who became the wife of William Penn.

The wide High Street is a mixture of fine old buildings of many periods from Tudor to Georgian with timbered and gabled cottages and inns opening on to the road.
Market Hall was built by Sir William Drake in 1682 and is supported by arches and still has an old twin lock up.

There are some interesting inns and hotels including The Crown Hotel’s records show 1620 but there are wall paintings with Elizabethan and in the lounge is a Tudor coat of arms with the quarterings of England and France and the lion and dragon supporters.
The King’s Arms is 16th century, The Swan Inn has gable wings with the date of 1671 on the chimney. The Elephant and Castle has an interesting sign, a gabled front and an old brick chimney.
