Visitors are welcome to enjoy the tranquility of the grounds and Abbey Church and may attend the monastic "Opus Dei". Groups by arrangement with the Guestmaster. Alton Abbey is home for a community of Anglican Benedictine monks. It is set amidst beech woodland between the villages of Beech and Medstead. The Abbey Church and Coventual Buildings, built of local flint, are to a design by Sir Charles Nicholson. The extensive gardens contain a large variety of mature specimen trees and shrubs, particularly rhododendrons and azaleas.
