A market town on the River Don situated in the centre of the fertile Howe of Alford a 10 miles of the Don Valley, sheltered by hills and wooded areas with salmon pools and trout fishing.
It was near here that the Battle of Alford was fought in 1645 in which Montrose deafeated the Covenanters.
