The town is centred on its castle, built on a promontory beside the Rheidol estuary, begun in 1277 by Edmund Crouchback, brother of Edward I and originally known as Lampadarn. The Welsh destroyed it in 1282 and in 1284 Edward I rebuilt it.

From 1404 to 1408 it was one of Owen Glendower’s chief strongholds, but fell later in the same year to Harry of Monmouth (afterwards Henry V) who brought the Kinge’s Gonne from Nottingham and weighing 4½ tons.

In 1646 the castle was blown up by the Parliamentary forces.

The remains of the castle which was concentric adjoin the south part of the sea front and its precincts are laid out as public gardens.
