Abbotsbury

A village with a long street of orange tinged houses and thatched cottages, in a sheltered green valley about a mile from the coast.

A narrow road opposite the Ilchester Arms leads high up Black Down Hill to a Hardy Monument not for the writer but to Admiral Hardy, Nelson’s captain at the Battle of Trafalgar.

The 15th century Church of St Nicholas has a marble monument of an abbot dating from the early 13th century.
