Only the great gateway in the High Street and domestic buildings remain of Southover Priory founded in 1077 by William De Warenne, as was Lewes Castle, and was larger than its diocesan church, Chichester Cathedral. and demolished by Oliver Cromwell in 1538.
At the dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century, much of the Priory was destroyed under the guidance of Thomas Cromwell. The remaining are part of the monastic living quarters.
