A site of Christian worship since 655AD, the present church, built from 1118 to 1238 as a Benedictine Abbey, was made a Cathedral by Henry VIII. Catherine of Aragon, first wife of Henry VIII, is buried here, as was Mary Queen of Scots after her execution at Fotheringhay, but was later removed.

The cathedral has unique arches at the West Front and rare painted wooden ceiling dating from 1220. This superb Norman church has a wonderful interior and has exquisite fan vaulting at the East End.
