Parliamentarians:

Earl of Essex

Result:                    Royalist Victory

Location:       Lostwithiel

The Battle of Lostwithiel or Lostwithiel Campaign took place on the 13 August 1644 and lasted until 2 September. The Earl of Essex believed that he would have the support of the Cornish people, but when the army arrived in Bodmin, Essex found that there were no supplies or soldiers. He withdrew to the port of Fowey, where he hoped he would find that the Earl of Warwick would arrive with his fleet. But no ship arrived, believed to have not been able to sail due to bad weather.

There were many clashes where the Royalists attacked several outposts on the banks of the River Fowey.

They captured both Restormel Castle and when they took Castle Dore, Essex left his infantry under his Sergeant Major General of Foot, Sir Phillip Skippon, and he escaped in a boat to Plymouth.

On September 2, Skippon was offered generous terms by the King, and he surrendered 6,000 infantry and all equipment
